“The dairy industry is not about nutrition; it is about power, control, domination over the feminine, and the violent rupture of a sacred bond. Veganism, therefore, is not merely a diet—it is a spiritual and political stance. It says: I will not be complicit in the severing of what is whole. I will honor the cries of all mothers. I will not consume the grief of a baby denied. Veganism is an act not just of eating but of listening. Of witnessing.” – Tami Hay
“We are creating a vegan world of peace, freedom, and loving kindness for all. We believe that this is the time of the Great Awakening of Humanity to leave behind the destructive nature of Homo Sapiens and become who we have always been destined to be – Homo Ahimsa. As Vegan Grandmothers, we are here to midwife the birth of the new compassionate human and bring in the new era of a vegan ahimsa world so that our children and grandchildren and those of all species can thrive and be free.” – Million Vegan Grandmothers

In The Omnivore’s Deception, author John Sanbonmatsu chronicles the rise of the meat industry, shows its catastrophic ecological effects, demolishes the myth of the “enlightened” omnivore, shows why animals are worthy of our respect, and advocates the abolition of the animal food economy. He edits and curates the website for the “Clean Meat Hoax”-– an informal group of scholar-activists concerned about the ways in which cellular or laboratory-grown meats are being used to attack animal advocacy and to strengthen the meat industry’s long-term strategy of creating a diverse “protein market” that includes meat from live animals. Cellular Meat serves as a distraction from the fundamental issues, papering over the problem of human mass violence against animals, and obscuring the urgent need for a plant-based human diet.
John is a speaker (Presentation: The Omnivore’s Deception – Veganism in Defense of Terrestrial Life) at the upcoming New England VegFest, Sunday, Apr. 26th, 2 pm, at Worcester State University.

“Vegan living as a practical response to war, injustice, disease, and environmental devastation continues to beckon humanity toward a bright alternative future. When we release our insistence on unnecessarily abusing other living beings, and reconnect with our inherent compassion for all forms of life, we will at last be worthy of the world of peace, abundance, justice, and health for which we yearn.” ~ Will Tuttle. Gretchen Ryan is a highly accomplished oil painter who has been an animal rights advocate and vegan for twenty-five years. For the past six years, she has been working on a monumental painting Liberty Leading the Animals, created with the ambitious intention of inspiring compassion for animals and envisioning a better way for humanity to interact with them, serving as heroes rather than their killers. The show stopping painting is seven feet tall by thirteen feet wide and depicts over 200 individual animals.
The singular, luminous work was inspired by Ryan’s early experiences learning about factory farming and the profound moral shift that led her to become vegan. Drawing on the composition of Eugène Delacroix’s historic painting Liberty Leading the People, Ryan reimagines the idea of liberation as something all sentient life should be allowed.
Known for her highly detailed, classically influenced oil painting, Ryan spent more than three decades developing her craft before undertaking this ambitious work. She chose to render the subject with beauty and dignity, creating an image that invites viewers to reflect on animals not through shock, but through reverence and empathy.
Ryan is currently completing the final days of work on the painting after more than six years in the studio. A documentary feature film,Liberty, about Ryan, the creation of the work and the ideas behind it by Fauna Films is forthcoming. Through the release of the painting and a forthcoming series of prints, Ryan hopes the project will inspire deeper awareness and compassion for animals while supporting the broader movement for their protection.
