In February 2005 she moved to the Department of Microbiology at Ohio State University as post-doctoral fellow where she did research on RNA in bacteria. In May 2008 she moved to Cancer Center as a post-doctoral fellow and started working in a human genetics laboratory studying genetic predisposition to colon cancer and later thyroid cancer. Since January 2017 she has been working at a cancer center in Southern California as Staff Scientist, working on genetic predisposition to breast cancer. During her career Jerneja has published several first author peer reviewed papers and collaborated with many scientists and co-authored research papers. In February 2018 she completed Plant Based Nutrition Certificate at T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and e-Cornell as she started realizing diseases can be prevented (even cancer). Forest Otter (formerly Sarah, known on Instagram as Sami @samijzitter) and Sherry celebrated their 17th Veganniversary the last week of January, 2025! This is a sacred milestone for them each year. For Sherry and Forest, veganism is primarily about Love.

They notice that over the years of being vegan, they have become more spiritually committed to nature. They have become more aware of the wisdom of all sentient beings and the line between “us” and “Nature” has become more blurred. Forest noted: “I am finding a home within myself for stronger vegan sensibilities, and my feelings about the energy that runs through all life. I see it as a home in my heart I want to share with others, through my art and how I live with Sherry.”

The Fable of Sherry & Forest

By Paul Carr

Once upon a crisp December morning, in a cozy red “stuga” on the shore of a lake, at the edge of a snow-kissed forest, lived two gentle souls named Sherry and Forest. Every dawn found them greeting the world with warm smiles and open hearts, eager to share their care with creatures great and small.

In that forest clearing, the birds knew their favorite feeders were always filled with seeds, no matter how cold the wind blew. Squirrels chattered happily, certain that Sherry and Forest’s porch would offer a safe nook to nibble an acorn. Occasionally, a weary stray cat might appear, lured by the promise of a nibble and a soft blanket. Even in the darkest nights, lost travelers would find their lanterns lighting the path.

Word of their kindness spread quietly through the forest. One day, a tiny robin told a passing fox, who told a wandering deer, who told a startled bunny: “If you are hungry, cold, or afraid, seek out Sherry and Forest. They will help.”

The more kindness they gave, the brighter the cottage glowed—from the laughter that filled its rooms, from the wagging of tails in the yard, and from the chorus of birdsong at the windows. Other folks in nearby cottages noticed this glow. Soon, they found themselves moved to share their own acts of goodwill. A neighbor knitted blankets for the shelter dogs; another offered warm soup to lost hikers.

As Christmas Eve arrived, the forest sparkled under a moonlit sky, shimmering with gratitude for Sherry and Forest’s generosity. Creatures from all corners ventured close to the little cottage, their hearts brimming with joy. Together, under a starlit pine, animals and people alike gathered to sing the silent hush of winter into a lullaby of thanks.

The Moral:
A single act of compassion, like a small spark in the darkness,
can illuminate an entire forest of hearts.
