“Whereas in the past we humans typically fought wars against external adversaries, evolving through four generations of warfare—from direct physical combat to the use of guns and cannons, to using aircraft and missiles to attack and bomb, to using drones, paramilitary operations, and guerilla and terrorist tactics—we are now in what is being referred to as fifth-generation warfare, which is mental and emotional, and in which the adversary is no longer external, but is embedded in all our social institutions.
